About

Hedges done properly. On the Thanet coast.

Margate & Hedges is run by Richard Lim. Local, honest, no upselling.

What I do

I cut hedges. I reduce overgrown ones. I remove the ones that have to go. And I plant new ones — with the right species for Thanet's thin, alkaline, salt-blown topsoil, not whatever the nursery has in stock.

That's it. No tree surgery, no lawn care, no fencing, no garden-services bundle. Hedges are a craft worth being good at; I keep the focus narrow so I am.

Why local matters here

Almost all of Cliftonville and most of the Old Town sits inside a Thanet DC conservation area — Margate (1978), Margate Seafront (1997), Northdown (1985), plus the Cliftonville cluster of Dalby Square, Clifton Place & Grotto Gardens, Ethelbert Road, Norfolk/Warwick/Surrey Road, Northdown Road, and more. Any hedge with a stem over 75mm at chest height triggers a six-week planning notice. The salt-spray envelope reaches 50m from the shore for the worst of it and 200m for the useful aerosol drop-off — that changes which species live and which get burned back to the wood every winter. An out-of-area contractor won't know any of that without being told.

I work this patch. The conservation-area paperwork is included in every quote. The salt-line species matrix is built into how I recommend replants. And the nesting-season protocol on jobs near Thanet Coast SSSI or the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay Ramsar is the default, not the exception.
