Cutting, reduction, removal and planting across Margate, Cliftonville and the villages either side. Fully insured. I plan around the bird-nesting window (1 March – 31 August). Six-week conservation-area notice handled for you across every Thanet CA.
What I do
Specified for Thanet's thin Upper-Chalk topsoil, the salt-wind envelope that reaches back from the coast, and the conservation-area rules that cover almost the whole of Cliftonville and the Old Town.
Twice-yearly cuts on Griselinia, Escallonia, Elaeagnus, privet, hornbeam and Leylandii. Clean lines, all arisings cleared, no power tools after 6pm.
See pricing & timingBringing mature Cliftonville and Northdown boundary hedges back into proportion — the ones that have outgrown Victorian and Edwardian front gardens over three or four decades.
How I reduce safelyFull removal, stump grinding where access allows, and arisings taken to Manston Road HWRC or Richborough under a licensed carrier. CA tree-check first.
What removal involvesThe right species matrix for Thanet's exposed front-line and second-line positions — Griselinia and Escallonia at the coast, Pittosporum and holly behind. Honest steers away from what won't cope.
Plan a new hedgeMy promise
I don't ask for payment until you've walked the hedge with me and you're happy. If I haven't done what I said I would, I put it right or you owe nothing. No deposits, no upfront, no chasing.
Anyone on a state pension, automatically. No card, no proof of anything — just mention it when you book. Honour system; I trust people.

Why local matters
Thanet sits on Upper Chalk bedrock with a Thanet-Formation sand cap. Topsoil is thin (often under 15cm), alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5), and drought-prone — Margate posts around 1,577 sunshine hours a year, one of the sunniest and driest corners of the UK. Add a north-and-east-facing coast exposed to salt-laden onshore blasts and you have a growing environment that eats generic-nursery species alive.
I work to that reality, not against it. Griselinia and Escallonia on front-line seafront boundaries. Pittosporum and Euonymus in the shelter behind. Hornbeam instead of beech where beech would scorch. And a tape measure on any stem near the 75mm CA threshold before I touch it.
In a Cliftonville CA?
Almost all of Cliftonville sits inside one of Thanet DC's conservation areas — Dalby Square, Clifton Place & Grotto Gardens, Ethelbert Road & Athelstan Road, Edgar Road & Sweyn Road, Norfolk/Warwick/Surrey Road, Northdown Road — plus the Margate (1978, extended 1994), Margate Seafront (1997) and Northdown (1985) designations. Any tree with a stem over 75mm at chest height needs six weeks' written notice before pruning. I file the section-211 notice on your behalf, included in every quote.
